Nyamira County doctors will strike at midnight following a disagreement between the county government and the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentist Union (KMPDU).

According to KMPDU, Nyanza Secretary General(SG) Aggrey Orwenyo, the 21-day strike notice ended today after the county failed to honor commitments as agreed between the two parties or call them for a meeting.

The SG encouraged the patients to seek medical skills and services from the neighboring counties.

“Patients from this county should seek medical skills and services from their neighboring counties,” he said.

Following a 2020 ruling from the Employment and Labour Relations Court, which instructed the county government to honor the collective bargaining agreement entered into, including the promotion of all doctors and the payment of accrued arrears in salary, one of the issues the doctors demanded to be addressed was doctors' promotions.

“Career progress of our members should be undertaken routinely yet the county government’s actions are in breach. The return to work formula and the revised scheme of services to doctors and there is a total lack of implementation of such within the prescribed period,” said Orwenyo.

According to KMPDU, they have followed up with the county government to resolve this conflict.

The county has rejected the work return formula by the CBA and the updated scheme of services.
