According to Federal University Gusau authorities, sixteen people have been freed after they were kidnapped by gunmen who attacked the learning institution in northwest Zamfara state last week.

Among those freed are fourteen students and two workers.

In a statement, the learning institution said the attack had caused tension at the university, and students were worried about their safety.

"It is against this background that we appeal to students and staff to remain calm and go about their normal activities while the security agencies are doing their best to rescue the remaining students and other individuals that are still in captivity," said the university.

After Tinubu gave the security forces the order to go after the kidnappers, the army, air force, police, and state security agency are in charge of an operation to rescue the remaining captives.

Formerly a well-known strategy used by Islamist terrorists to scare the populace, kidnapping students has evolved into a lucrative business for armed gangs seeking ransom payments.
