The Muslim community in Jinja City is urging for the cancellation of the annual social event known as Nyege Nyege. They assert that the immodesty exhibited at this gathering goes against Muslim principles, providing ample grounds for its discontinuation. Scheduled for November 9th this year, the event is anticipated to draw thousands of attendees.

As reported by Uganda's Daily Monitor, Sheikh Ismail Basoga Adi, the Khadi of Jinja District, underscored the significance of discontinuing the event, Nyege Nyege. He maintained this stance despite acknowledging that numerous individuals derive financial gains from it. He asserted that the event is actively contributing to the moral decline of society. The Sheikh made these remarks during a fundraiser for the Busoga Women Muslim Daawa and Development Association in Jinja.

“Previously, it was held in Buikwe District, but it will now take place in the city center.” I’m not sure why they chose Jinja City; perhaps people who have looked into what’s going on in Nyege Nyege can testify,” he continued.

The event has faced resistance from various segments of the Ugandan population, encompassing both Christian and Muslim communities.

Formerly, Sam Lokodo, Uganda's ex-minister of ethics, made efforts to permanently prohibit its occurrence within the country.
