Thika-based detectives have apprehended a notorious sim swap fraudster, Emmanuel Kiprono, caught in the act at a Safaricom shop. Kiprono attempted to secure a sim replacement using a forged ID waiting card and a counterfeit police abstract form from Central Police Station-Nairobi.

During questioning, Kiprono divulged crucial information leading detectives to a residence in Zimmerman. There, they uncovered a cache of incriminating evidence, including a mobile phone utilized for sim registration, an assortment of sim replacement cards, counterfeit police abstract forms and waiting cards bearing various names, an Mpesa till number application booklet, numerous forged ID cards, and other pertinent items.

This arrest mirrors a similar incident involving Kiprono's accomplice, Everline Alulu Kimani, who was apprehended on September 19, 2023, and subsequently arraigned. Like Kiprono, Kimani attempted to exploit Safaricom services using falsified documents to pilfer funds from unsuspecting victims' mobile wallets. Authorities discovered handwritten documents containing sensitive customer information at her residence in Komarock-Nairobi.

Kiprono and Kimani are believed to be associated with the notorious Mulot team, known for targeting individuals with substantial mobile money balances. Once they gain control of a victim's phone number, they swiftly siphon off funds from their accounts.

The DCI extends gratitude to the vigilant and astute Safaricom attendants who promptly alerted law enforcement to the suspicious activity. The public is encouraged to collaborate with us in our collective effort to combat crime. Additionally, an active manhunt is underway to apprehend several accomplices who have been identified in connection with these crimes.
