The National Assembly has disclosed that different police units are expected to be deployed in Haiti and why the Kenyan forces are well fit to triumph in their mission.

Speaking on Citizen TV, National Assembly Defence and Foreign Relations Committee Chairperson Nelson Koech said the officers deployed for the Haiti mission would be drawn from the special police units.

The Belgut Member of Parliament pointed out that officers drawn from the Recce squad and Rapid Deployment Units would form part of the units sent to the Caribbean nation.

“The units which are going to be deployed are of course the special units in our police force... RDU, Recce Squad,” he said.

Further, the MP who underscored the importance of the mission said that multi-agency teams will be battling over 200 gangs in Haiti.

“There are more than 200 gangs in Haiti. The most serious one is the one that is being led by former police officer ‘Barbeque’ which operates in the capital,” he said.

He also said that not only Kenyan forces will be sent to the mission but also troops from other nations as approved by the United Nations Security Council.

“There is already a lead team doing a pathfinding to know what is exactly happening in Haiti. It is not only our Kenyan police that are going there. They are only sending 1000 police officers among other officers from other different countries; Jamaica, Rwanda and Canada.”

The lawmaker exuded confidence that Kenyan police would deal with Haitian gangs, citing their past victories in containing the notorious Mungiki sect, Kamjech, Sungusungu, and other local gangs..
