Eugene Wamalwa, the leader of the Democratic Action Party Kenya (DAP-K), has hinted that he plans to run for president in the general election of 2027.

Wamalwa declares that he is prepared to enter the race for the nation's top seat and has already received his party's support.

"I am prepared, and as we speak, I have taken over the leadership of DAP-K, and I already have the endorsement from the party to be their presidential candidate in the 2027 polls," he stated to Sunday Nation.

"We are in the process now of carrying out membership recruitment to strengthen our party at the grassroots."

A member of the Azimio la Umoja coalition, the former Defense Cabinet Secretary also brushed off concerns that he would clash with the alliance's leader, Raila Odinga, who is also anticipated to run for president.

According to him, no one is prohibited by the coalition from running for office or adopting any political position.

"We are very democratic, and we believe that a strong ODM as Raila re-energizes his party, a strong Wiper as Kalonzo Musyoka re-energizes his party, and a strong DAP and other constituent parties will make a stronger Azimio. I believe we will capture the presidency that eluded us," he said.

Wamalwa has indicated she would like to run for president in 2027, joining Kalonzo on the list.

Mr. Odinga has not stated if he will run for president, but he has expressed confidence that Kalonzo can easily defeat Ruto should they face off in the election.

"Mr. Odinga, however, believes that Mr. Musyoka has what it takes to beat Hon. William Ruto in a free and fair presidential contest, contrary to Mr. Ruto's recent claim that he would easily beat the Wiper leader," read a past statement from Odinga spokesperson Dennis Onyango.
