Isaac Mutuma M'Ethingia, who has served as Meru County’s Deputy Governor since 2022 has now assumed the governorship of the Meru county.

This comes after the impeachment of Governor Kawira Mwangaza by the Senate in 2024, a decision upheld by a court ruling on March 14, 2025.

Mutuma was sworn into office on Monday at Mwendantu Grounds in Meru County, in a ceremony attended by leaders from within and beyond the county.

Meru leaders have emphasized that Governor Mutuma’s first major task is to unite Meru County, which has been plagued by persistent conflicts since Kawira Mwangaza’s election in 2022.

Majority Whip Jim Muchui noted that the Ameru people have suffered due to a lack of leadership and stability. He expressed hope that the new governor will bridge the gap between the County Assembly and the Executive, restoring harmony in the region.

“For the last two years Meru has been divided. His first responsibility is to see how he can unite the people of Meru and the leadership,” said Muchui.

“We also expect the Governor to immediately submit the supplementary budget in the Assembly because there is an itemized budget we did and the former governor blatantly refused to implement,” he added.

On August 21, 2024, 26 senators voted to impeach Mwangaza on charges of gross misconduct and violation of the Constitution and other laws. Four senators voted in her favor, while 14 abstained.

This marked the third impeachment motion against Mwangaza to be brought before the Senate.
