Edwin Mugo, Member of Parliament for Mathioya Constituency, has sparked an internet debate after it was revealed that he distributed matchboxes with an image of his face on them.

A snapshot that has gone viral on social media shows green matchboxes emblazoned with Mugo's images and the UDA colours.

Mugo, a first-time Member of Parliament, won the Mathioya parliamentary seat in last year's General Election with 21, 503 votes, beating out his prominent opponent, Peter Kimari, who received 8, 790 votes.

Kenyan politicians are infamous for providing items imprinted with their images to encourage followers, particularly during campaigns.

Marianne Kitany, an Aldai Member of Parliament, was recently chastised online for gifting textbooks with her face.

The legislator visited Banja Primary School and Kaptwai Primary School, where she presented branded textbooks to Class Eight students.

Kitany stated that the book's distribution was one of the promises she promised to voters during the campaign.

The MP stated that she hopes to donate revision books to more than 140 schools before this year's national exams.
