The Olympic 100-meter champion Marcell Jacobs has decided to skip the upcoming European Athletics Team Championships in Poland because of persistent sciatica problems.

Jacobs must “take additional time for treatment and specific training, until the problem is fully resolved,” the Italian athletics federation said in a statement.

After a challenging start to the season, the 28-year-old is aiming to be in top form for the world championships in Budapest from August 19–27.

Due to a back issue, the Italian has backed out of matchups against world champion Fred Kerley twice.

In the Diamond League competition on Friday in Paris, he could only finish sixth, 10.21 seconds off the lead.

Jacobs has sciatic nerve inflammation in his upper right leg, according to the Italian Federation.
