Dani Alves, a former Barcelona and Brazil defender, was formally charged on Wednesday with sexually assaulting a woman in a Barcelona nightclub in December, and his lawyer said the player will not stall the process by challenging the indictment.

The court stated that she had discovered evidence of wrongdoing by the 40-year-old athlete, who claims he had consensual intercourse with his accuser.

Alves was detained on January 20 and is being held without bail in a prison outside of Barcelona. If convicted, he faces a prison sentence of four to fifteen years.

"Dani Alves is upset with the narrative of the facts... he disagrees with it," Alves' lawyer, Cristobal Martell, said to reporters shortly after his client appeared in court in Barcelona.

"He has also stated that he will not appeal in order to expedite the judicial process," Martell continued.

The prosecution must now file formal charges with the court, while the defence will offer written claims. Following that, a trial date will be determined.
