Tuesday saw the shooting death of a 22-year-old man who had attacked a policeman for attempting to stop him from hacking his mother, 68, at their Chekata, Kakamega County, home.

According to the police, the man's older brother went to the Navakholo Police Station and reported that Ian Wanjala had threatened to kill their mother and had armed himself with a knife, hoe, and machete.

When a team of officers arrived at the scene of the distress call, led by the Officer Commanding the Station (OCS), they discovered that the suspect was armed and pursuing the mother.

According to a police report, after the officers tried to appease the suspect, he turned on the OCS and tried to sever his head with the hoe.

"The OCS evaded the aim, blocking with his right hand there by sustaining two broken fingers and unfortunately fell to the ground while attempting to escape. The suspect cornered him and again aimed with the jembe, but before striking, the OCS fired a warning round in the air," police said.

The OCS shot the suspect in the chest as he continued to try and sever the still-down OCS.

Both the suspect and the OCS were rushed to the Navakholo Sub-County Hospital where the latter was declared dead on arrival.

The OCS was given first aid treatment and referred to Kakamega County General Referral Hospital while the deceased's body was moved to the facility’s mortuary to await post-mortem.
