A farmer is counting losses after lionesses  killed three sheep and injured others on Monday night in Embakasi, Isinya Sub County.

According to the owner, Jackline Kishanto, the two lionesses have been wandering in the area for days, only to break into her home to kill the remaining part of her flock after the recent drought decimated a bigger part of her animals.

The farmer lamented that despite alerting the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) about the freely roaming lionesses, they have yet to take any action to move the cats from their homesteads, only for KWS officers to appear to take photos of her dead animals.

Kishanto is pleading with the KWS to quickly compensate her for the loss, adding that this is the second time wildlife has killed her livestock.

“In the year 2019, lions invaded our homestead and killed 12 of my sheep which have not been compensated up to now. The wildlife is impoverishing me since livestock is my only source of livelihood,” she said.

She is pleading with the KWS to assist her in installing solar lights in her home and providing compensation since the wildlife has not been deterred by fencing her homestead.

Because of Embakasi's close vicinity to the Nairobi National Park, incidents of conflict between humans and wildlife are common there.
