The unexpected dissolution of President William Ruto's Cabinet has left many shocked, with prominent figures who had resigned from elective positions to join the Executive among the most affected. Notable departures include former Transport CS Kipchumba Murkomen, former Defence CS Aden Duale, and former Internal Security CS Kithure Kindiki.

Kithure Kindiki

Abraham Kithure Kindiki, a former senator from Tharaka Nithi County and immediate past Cabinet Secretary for Internal Security, faced a significant setback. Before the 2022 general elections, President Ruto persuaded the Professor of Law to abandon his gubernatorial aspirations, promising a Cabinet position after Kindiki lost the running mate slot to DP Rigathi Gachagua. A close confidant and personal lawyer to Ruto during the ICC trials, Kindiki's exit comes after notable efforts to enhance security in banditry-prone areas, modernize security agency equipment, and establish new administrative units.

Appointed in September 2022 to revive Kenya's struggling economy, Prof. Njuguna Ndung’u brought his experience as a former Central Bank Governor (2007-2015). Despite his technocratic expertise and soft-spoken demeanor, his tenure as Cabinet Secretary for Treasury was cut short.

Kipchumba Murkomen

Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Onesimus Kipchumba Murkomen, one of President Ruto’s trusted allies, had just bid farewell to his Senate colleagues before securing his CS seat. However, he was not spared during the Cabinet reshuffle.


Soipan Tuya

Following Murkomen's emotional farewell speech, nominated Senator Rosalinda Soipan Tuya also expressed gratitude as she transitioned to the executive. Her tenure was similarly short-lived.

Aden Duale

In the National Assembly, former Garissa Township MP Aden Barre Duale, who had vowed to retire from politics if Ruto became President, also found himself on the chopping block.


Other notable figures affected include:

  • Alice Wahome, who had recently secured her third term as Kandara legislator before transitioning to roles in the Ministries of Water and Sanitation, and later Lands.
  • Moses Kuria, former Public Service and Delivery Management CS, who was demoted from the Trade docket months before his dismissal.
  • Ababu Namwamba, Sports CS, who was preparing for the Paris Olympics.
  • Alfred Mutua, former Tourism CS and leader of the Maendeleo Chap Chap party.


Additional casualties include Information Communication and Digital Economy CS Eliud Owalo, the sole Luo-Nyanza representative in Ruto’s cabinet, Attorney General Justin Bedan Muturi, former National Assembly Speaker, and several other CSs: Lands CS Zachary Njeru, Peninah Malonza of the African Community and Regional Development, Aisha Jumwa of Gender, and Florence Bore of Labour.

The dismissals came exactly a week after the cabinet met, following two weeks of anti-government protests that forced President Ruto to withdraw the controversial Finance Bill 2024.
