Hundreds of women from Kirinyaga County have called on President William Ruto to consider appointing Governor Anne Waiguru as Deputy President.
This request comes after the impeachment of Rigathi Gachagua. The women, who included community leaders from all 20 wards, voiced their support during a gathering in Kutus town, emphasizing that Kenya is ready for a female Deputy President.

Led by Mary Nyawira, the women highlighted Waiguru’s leadership and achievements in Kirinyaga, where she has implemented economic empowerment programs that have significantly improved the lives of residents.
They urged President Ruto to fulfill his earlier promise of supporting a female leader for such a position, pointing out Waiguru’s proven track record in governance, economic policy, and grassroots development.
Another speaker, Khadija Wanjiru, underscored Waiguru’s expertise in economic policy and her contributions to the county’s devolution success. She noted that Kirinyaga had set a development benchmark for other counties, largely due to Waiguru’s leadership, and expressed confidence that she could replicate her success at the national level.
The women also reminded President Ruto of his commitment to gender-balanced leadership, advocating for Waiguru’s appointment as Deputy President to further represent women at the highest levels of government.
Recently, Waiguru has garnered increasing support for the Deputy President position, with endorsements from leaders nationwide, including during a recent G7 Strategy event in Kirinyaga.
Her leadership roles, including her tenure as the first female Chair of the Council of Governors, have earned her widespread recognition for her contributions to national and county-level development.
