A devastating attack on Al-Fashir's main hospital in western Sudan claimed nine lives and injured 20 others, including patients and their families.

The tragic incident has drawn global condemnation, with World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus denouncing the assault as part of a disturbing trend of violence targeting healthcare facilities in the region.

In a statement shared on social media platform X on Saturday, Tedros called for an immediate end to such violence, emphasizing the need to protect patients and medical staff. "Attacks on health facilities in Sudan must stop," he urged.

Sudan has been engulfed in turmoil since April 2023, when a power struggle erupted between army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) leader.

The conflict has resulted in over 11 million people being displaced, tens of thousands of civilian deaths, and a catastrophic humanitarian crisis in East Africa.

Al-Fashir, the capital of North Darfur, has faced severe hardships since May, with RSF forces besieging the area and cutting off vital trade routes and aid deliveries. This blockade has further deepened the region's suffering, leaving millions desperately needing assistance.
